The selection and location of extinguishers is very important when attacking a fire as there are different types of extinguishers for different types of fire hazards.

Dry Chemical
These are the most commonly used extinguishers as they are suitable for most types of fires.
They come in a range of sizes from 1.0kg 1A:10BE,
2.5kg 2A:30BE
4.5kg 3A:40BE
4.5kg 30BE:1F
9.0kg 6A:80BE
Dry Chemical Powder is available in two types of powder “BE” and “ABE”.
The “BE” powder can be used on fires involving electrical equipment, flammable liquids and cooking oils, whilst the “ABE” powder type is recommended to extinguish fires that involve wood, paper, flammable liquid and electrical equipment.

Carbon Dioxide
These are recommended for class “E” fires which involves electrically energised equipment, it may also be used for small flammable or combustible liquid class “B” fires and has limited capabilities to extinguish class “A” fires.
They are available in three sizes 2.0kg 2BE
3.5kg 5BE
5.0kg 5BE
Location of these extinguishers is vital as discharge within confined spaces is not recommended due to the fact carbon dioxide replaces the oxygen.

Foam
These are recommended for class “A & B” fires which include flammable and combustible liquids such as petrol, oil, paints, paper, wood and plastics.
This type of extinguishers comes in a 9.0lt 3A:30B cylinder.
They should never be used for “E” class fires (electrical) due to the fact that it is water based.

Air Water
These extinguishers are limited to extinguish class “A” fires only which includes wood, paper, plastics, and textiles.
They are available in a 9.0lt 2A size only, and are not suitable to be used on class “B, (E) or “F” fires.

Wet Chemical
This type of extinguisher is mainly used in kitchens to extinguish class “F” fires which include cooking oil and fats.
They are available in a 2.0lt 1A:4F and a 7.0lt 2A:4F, and should never be used for class (E) fires.
